asa’s big boy room–revealed!

This weekend, Melody and I installed {almost all of} Asa’s new big boy room!  I posted the idea boards HERE back in October.  We switched up some of the product for pricing purposes but kept the theme and it turned out great!

Here are some pictures of the finished product.

Play Corner

{in case you’re wondering…yes!  those 26  frames took FOREVER to hang!}

Magnet Wall!

This was Asa’s mommy’s favorite part of the room!  Their fridge isn’t magnetic so he will finally be able to play with all of those fun magnets!

Asa’s new “big boy” bed–it has stairs and he LOVES climbing up and down.

Since the bed didn’t have a headboard, we added a subtle stripe to the wall behind the behind using the same color paint in two different finishes–satin & gloss.

We are still waiting on the rug:

…and the second slipcover for the bean bag chair.

The fabric company shipped the wrong fabric…

the fabric we ordered

I love all of the playful elements in the room–I’m sure Asa will have lots of fun in here!

Have a great weekend!

throw pillows: a “how-to”

If you’re like me, you love throw pillows. If your husband is like mine, he hates them. They “get in the way and cost too much money”. But they can add so much fun to a room–color, pattern, texture…so I keep them around anyway, even if they all end up piled onto one sofa by the end of the night.

It can be hard to master mixing-and-matching of throw pillows, though, and sometimes there’s really no formula to making it work. It just does. Other times, though, you can follow a few simple rules when mixing-and-matching and it comes out beautifully.  Usually the mix includes patterns (small & large) and solids.

Option 1:  1 solid + 1 bold stripe (or large geometric pattern) + 1 floral

Option 2: 1 large pattern + 1 small pattern

Option 3: 1 pattern + 1 solid

Option 4: multiple patterns in the same color scheme

Option 5: all florals

These are not the only combinations that work but they are a few of the simplest that make the most impact.  If you’re looking for some pattern options, click the link on the left for the “Top 10 Fabric Patterns of 2011” (I’m pretty sure they’re still popular even though it’s 2012)

Hope this helps as you clear away the Christmas and re-decorate for the new year!

hooked on hooks

I don’t know about you, but I am ready to de-clutter!  After pumpkins and candy corn, Christmas trees and garland, I’m wanting everything clean, neat, and organized.  Over the Christmas holiday, I cleaned out my closet and my husband’s closet but, since the decorations have come down, I’m ready to get the rest of the house into a neater feel.

A friend of mine recently added a row of hooks to the wall by her front door.  I don’t usually hang much by the front door–living in Florida, we’re not constantly toting around coats, scarves, and hats…and neither are our guests, but I still liked the hook look.  And it doesn’t necessarily have to go by the front door, either, I’ve decided.  The bathroom, of course, is another option, but in a mudroom, bedroom, or closet work as well.  So, today, I’m hooked on hooks.

Here’s a little inspiration for my daily obsession.

asa’s room

My friend, Melody, is expecting her second little one in a few months, which means her first born, Asa, will be getting a new, “big boy” room.  She’s asked me to put some ideas together for his new room and I wanted to share what I came up with!

She had already purchased the bedding {so I had lots of colors to work with} and picked a bed and was hoping for some more storage since his room isn’t very large.

What do you think?!

free printables for the season

I’m sure you all know by now that I love free printables!  Well…I love anything free {who doesn’t?!}.  But there are some really, REALLY cute free printables out there.

My husband turned 28 on Friday and we had a little party for him Saturday evening.  He got a fire pit, so we had friends over for some s’mores and, while I was looking for labels and bunting to decorate the s’more table…

…I found all sorts of great printables that will be extremely useful for the holiday season!

Like these great printable banners from At Second Street

Or these gift tags from Eat. Drink. Chic

these from My Lucky Lemon

and these from Smitten Blog Designs

I can’t wait to use the gift tags!  They’re adorable!

What other great printables have you found that you’d like to share?
